colour-coded calendar, a story about boundaries I don’t actually keep.

I’ve stopped.

Balance has never once described my life; I’ve come to realize that what I really have is integration. Those are not the same word wearing different clothes. Balance implies two things held in careful opposition, each waiting its turn.

Integration is messier and closer to the truth: everything running at once, none of it fully off, all of it somehow adding up to a life.

Let me tell you about a Tuesday. Not a good one or a bad one. Just an ordinary one.

It starts before six, because one of the children is awake and has decided the day should be too. There is oatmeal, a missing toy fire truck, and there is a not-so-small negotiation about socks that I will not win. By the time we’re ready to leave the house, I’ve already fielded a customer query on our equipment inventory, half-read it standing at the door, and set it aside for later because later is when most things actually get decided (like prices).

The morning proper starts with a team call - walking through client questions, deliverables and deadlines. I am, for thirty minutes, an entirely different version of myself: sharper, more clipped, thinking in funnels and spreadsheet numbers.

I like this version. I don’t live in her full-time, but I’m glad she’s available when needed. After the call I sit for a moment longer than I should, not because I’m tired exactly, but because switching costs something, and nobody warns you about that part. You don’t just move between roles. You have to put one down before you can pick the next one up, and some days the putting-down takes longer than the work itself.

Then it’s the marketing work - checking on our ads, tweaking websites, looking through analytics numbers. This is quieter work. It asks less of me and somehow takes just as long.

Somewhere in the middle of that, I open The Notebook. The special one where I scribble notes on the books I want to write - fiction and non-fiction, and I write segments that pop into my head, plan character backgrounds and talk through themes like I’m having a conversation with an editor (who is in fact, just me).

But today, there isn’t time to really write, so I just re-read section and see if my characters still resonate with me. I make some edits, add a paragraph and delete others, and then close it.

That’s the whole of today’s progress. It doesn’t feel like much when I’m inside it, and I’ve had to learn, slowly, that it counts anyway. Things are not built in the days that feel like building. They’re built in the accumulation of days that don’t.

By early afternoon there’s a school pickup, a little scratch on the face that turns out to be nothing, a conversation in the car that I will not remember the content of by dinner but will remember the tone of for much longer - the particular unguarded chatter that only happens when nobody’s trying to have a meaningful moment. Then home, and the strange whiplash of going from someone’s mother back to someone running four things, because the customer has decided that they want to negotiate on price and it’s not a conversation I can hold off for long.

This is the part nobody puts in the highlight reel.

Not the crisis - there wasn’t really a crisis, just a decision that needed making with less information than I wanted - but the sheer adjacency of it all. Motherhood and margins in the same hour. A facial scratch and a price negotiation.

I used to think this adjacency was the failure - proof I hadn’t yet built the systems sophisticated enough to keep these worlds properly apart. I don’t think that any more. I think the adjacency is the actual shape of the life I’m building, and the discomfort I used to feel about it was really just grief for a version of balance that was never going to be available to me anyway.

By evening, everyone is finally down, and I don’t do anything productive with the hour that follows. I sit with tea gone lukewarm and keep my laptop open - but it’s on Facebook, Instagram or Netflix. This used to feel like failure too - time not converted into output, an hour with nothing to show for it.

I’ve come to think the opposite is closer to true: that the hour is not empty, it’s recovering. Rest isn’t the gap between the meaningful parts of the day. On a day built like this one, it might be the most structural part of it - the thing that makes tomorrow’s version of all this possible at all.

Nothing about that Tuesday would make a good case study. There’s no metric that improved, no launch, no clean narrative arc. Just a couple of ventures moving forward by inches, two small people slightly better cared for than the day before, and one small paragraph in a manuscript, quietly moved into a better place.

I used to think a meaningful life got built in the big, visible swings. I’m fairly convinced now it’s built in Tuesdays like this one - unglamorous, adjacent, integrated rather than balanced - and that the smallness of the pieces is not a sign you’re failing to build something. It’s usually just what building actually looks like, from inside the Tuesday it’s happening on.

More soon,

<picture></picture>

Integration, not balance, is the only version of this that’s ever actually been true.
